Tlaquepaque México

Historically known as San Pedro Tlaquepaque, this city and municipality in the Mexican state of Jalisco still preserves several wooded areas dominated by acacia, palo dulce, and granjeno. Designated a “Pueblo Mágico” in 2018, Tlaquepaque is a tourist destination renowned for its artisan traditions in pottery, textiles, and blown glass. Its streets and promenades are lined with elegant mansions from the last century and colonial-era buildings, and it is one of the stops on the Tapatío Tour. A key attraction is El Parián, a large plaza bordered by columned arcades and surrounded by restaurants and bars. The main square in the city center, El Jardín Hidalgo (Hidalgo Garden), is named for Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the Father of Mexican Independence, and features a larger-than-life statue of him. Other notable landmarks include two important churches—the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Solitude (El Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad) and Saint Peter (San Pedro)—as well as the Benito Juárez Market. Tlaquepaque is also famous for its mariachi bands. During the annual festivities for Saint Peter, El Jardín fills with stalls and street vendors, and on the feast day itself, towering firework-covered structures known as the Castillo (“castle”) and Toro (“bull”) are ignited in a spectacular display.
